3. A hijabi Like me

Time and again, there are bound to be people asking me why I don the hijab (in layman terms: putting a piece of cloth wrap around my head).

Of course, the main reason has to be because of my religion. However, if I were to explain base on that context, it’s long winded and complex. So I usually asked them back: “Why do you purchase a handphone cover?”

Wearing the hijab is similar with purchasing the handphone cover. It acts as a protection; basically to maintain modesty for women.

“How do you withstand the heat?”
Tricky question indeed. I remembered clearly how I was practically drenched in sweat when I first wore it. No kidding. Well I couldn’t avoid it given that Singapore’s weather is humid and sunny all year round except for the occasional monsoon season.

But hey like they say, it gets better with time.  I guess I got use to it. No doubt I still feel hot and stuffy. That’s usually why I opt for bright colours instead of all black since wearing the latter will absorb more heat.

So...Why is it some wore it while others don’t?”
First and foremost, I do not speak for the majority. Truth to be told, all Muslim ladies are forced to wear when they reach puberty.

Personally for me, I was brought up in an almost “Hitler-Like” family. And yes, after reaching the puberty age, as you might have guess it, I was told to wear it. You can practically say that I was being forced into wearing the hijab.

However, as the time passes, I developed an immense love for my hijab. I take special care from the choice of fabric to the little gritty details on the choice of hijab style.

So...there you have it; some of the popular questions that were frequently asked.

With that I shall leave you, readers, with this: while the hijab allows majority to know what my religion is, it doesn’t define who I truly am. Indeed, do not judge the book by its cover because there is more that meets the eye.  :)
